Pop Top v Hard Top Caravans

  • Written by MISS.com.au

Buying a new caravan involves a lot of decisions. Just when you thought storage, size, tow weight, and set up convenience were the top considerations, the price of petrol adds to the drama.

When the Travel Goals Are Endless But the Budget Is Not

There are two main models of Australian Caravans: hard top and pop top caravans. The size and model can make a difference in wind drag, weight, and overall dimensions. Pop tops tend to be lighter, smaller, use less fuel and are easier to haul, but may not be suitable for you personally. Each model has factors you should consider; mostly personal decisions based on convenience, your health, purpose and budget.

Health

Knee, back and hip pain can creep in as you enter your golden years. Pop tops don't just pop up; some can pop out, too. Some models have pop-up beds that require you to climb into bed, which may put pressure on painful joints. Hard tops have lower beds, and you can ease down into them if back, knee, or hip pain accompanies your getaway.

Pop tops also tend to have their storage at or below shoulder-to-waist height. If bending down is an issue, this needs to be considered. Similarly, a hard top with high storage spaces may affect shoulder, upper back and neck issues.

Most pop tops have hydraulic assistance for expansion these days, but if buying an older “manual” model, consider your upper-body strength or any injuries that may interfere.

Purpose

What are your travel plans? Are you a large family, a couple or solo travelling? Is lots of travel and many destinations a priority? Or are short staycations your favourite?

If you’re going to be travelling almost daily and the price of fuel is a sore point, a pop top is your budget's best friend.

For those who spend less time on the road and like to take their time in each location, the convenience of a hard top is hard to look past.

Convenience

Hard tops have more storage, quick and easy setup, and for taller customers, more height in door frames and showers. For larger families or those who like to bring everything, you need a lot more storage.

Pop-top caravans are gentler on the fuel budget; new models have an easy hydraulic setup, are easier to tow, and are generally smaller when folded down for towing.

Choosing a caravan and travelling in style means choosing the option that suits your lifestyle, travel plans, needs, and budget.
