Organic Food

Move over, butter. There's a new golden spread in town, and it's called OMGhee.

South Australian startup OMGhee is behind the gheelicious new product which is loaded with health benefits.

"We're a organic, bio-dynamic, small batch ghee producer with big plans to educate and inspire Australians on the health benefits of eating ghee", OMGhee founder Lisa Ormenyessy said.

"Ghee is essentially pure butter which undergoes a heating process where all the water, casein, lactose and other proteins are removed, creating a lactose free and lower carbohydrate alternative to butter".

"It's perfect for sautéing, baking, frying or spreading on your toast. It's a healthier alternative to butter or oil," Lisa said.

Many cultures have long benefited from this superfood. In fact, ghee has been a staple in Indian Ayurvedic medicine for centuries before western medicinal concepts came into vogue.

The launch of OMGhee is evidence that the Great Resignation phenomenon has hit Adelaide, with Lisa leaving her 20-year career as a business coach to follow her joy: making ghee.

"I was working as a business coach supporting women in business through a COVID recovery program and one day a question occurred to me, "If I can’t follow my joy at 50, what’s the point?"

After a lifetime of playing by the rules and working in corporate settings, Lisa finished up her contract, took the plunge and discovered the life-changing joy of making ghee.

“I remember as a kid my grandma would put so much better on her bread. I’ve always loved butter but after delving into the study of  Ayurveda, I became aware that ghee is a healthier alternative to butter and oil.

“Throughout the pandemic, I’d find myself in the butter aisle at the shopping centre, wondering how each brand would react when transformed into ghee. Eventually it led me to test different brands and before too long OMGhee was born.

“I realised life is too short not to follow your joy. The change was immediate. No longer was I hustling, pushing and surviving. Instead, I experienced flow, grace and ease. I was less stressed and excited about my work.”

OMGhee is attracting the attention of ghee-loving foodies,  food connoisseurs and health enthusiasts and is tipped to become the next big food trend and must-have pantry item in Australia.

"Because it's lactose-free, high in fat, low carbohydrate alternative to butter, and has a higher smoke point than traditional cooking oils, it is rapidly gaining popularity in the dairy-free, paleo, keto and general cooking communities.

"Everyone who tastes it says they can't believe they've been cooking with anything else.

"It takes me about six hours to turn the butter into ghee," says Lisa.

"Standing over the stove, watching, listening and smelling the glorious transformation of butter into ghee, the solids containing the milk proteins and lactose separate and the water slowly evaporates - the butter succumbs, or surrenders, into ghee.

"The process requires total presence and intention. For me, it’s my great pause from the hustle and bustle. Some people meditate, I make ghee.

"The result is a deliciously buttery, creamy product with undertones of caramel and butterscotch”.
